To say that adding a new member of the family is life-changing would be a pretty epic understatement! When you’ve been married for five years, you’ve finally started to get the marriage thing figured out. Things have reached an equilibrium, you know? Adding a new baby to a mix is one of the most wonderful, life-altering events in your life. It gives you new depth, new love and a new purpose. But most couples struggle, at least a little bit, to find a new equilibrium afterward. (With a six week-old baby, I remember being exhausted by just leaving the house looking presentable, LOL) But some couples, like this one, make it seem – dare I say it – easy.
We had this photo shoot on the day of their anniversary. Being a military couple, it was the first one in THREE years they were able to celebrate together. I couldn’t believe they wanted to have portraits made!! But they did . . . and we did! Everyone was relaxed and had fun. If the baby got hungry, we took a break – no stress involved. When it was all said and done, they got to go out for a nice anniversary dinner! I guess some people are just naturals. :)

As I waited to photograph this family, I had a little time to take a stroll. This particular field is so pretty, but I really only go there in cooler months, since the grass can get too long in summer. This evening, everything was green and lush, and the weather was absolutely perfect. The only thing more picturesque would’ve been a whole herd of deer, but I quickly scared away several as I walked. This was my time to focus. Each time I leave to go photograph someone, I get nervous. Every. Single. Time. You’d think that, after all this time, it wouldn’t affect me that much. But it does. And this family was no different. They are the kind of people who are beloved by everyone who knows them. Always quick to offer a helping hand, the first to volunteer their time, these people love God and others! They are dear friends, and I wanted so badly to do right by them.
When it was all said and done, we had a really fun evening getting these shots. There was gorgeous light, a great couple, precious kiddos and a bubble machine! What more could you ask for?

I got a call from a friend of mine a couple of months ago, asking about getting some family pictures made. ”Sure,” I said! But then she surprised me by saying that in addition to more formal portraits, they were also interested in doing something a little more adventurous. Kind of like my own family, they harbor a not-so-secret love of the television show, “Duck Dynasty”. Even if you are not a fan of the show, no doubt you’ve seen its stars decked out in full camouflage, faces painted and with “wild man” beards on display. The idea was to have a Duck Dynasty-style family shoot, complete with swampy water, camo and face paint! To say we were all giddy about this idea was an UNDERSTATEMENT! We had so much fun planning this shoot! Even my search for a “swamp” ended up right behind my own house, which was (falsetto) convenient!
And because of their love for their four-footed friends, we also got to have the family’s two great danes and one shih tzu come along for the ride, which made our own little dog very happy, since she has no idea she’s not their size, LOL! When it was all said and done, we had all had such a blast, that we joked we should do the same thing the next Saturday night. I’m totally on board with that. :)

When I was little, I used to spend a couple of weeks each summer with my grandparents. They lived on a large cattle ranch and had every kind of animal a kid could ever want. I have such fond memories of those times. Aside from all of the farm life my brother and I got to enjoy, I remember little things like playing with my grandmother’s costume jewelry – putting all those fun rings on my little fingers. Isn’t it funny the things we remember from childhood?
Several years ago, my grandmother passed away. Among the things I have to remember her by is one of those rings as well as a fur wrap and hat with her name embroidered in the lining. I wear the ring often, but seldom have any opportunity to wear the fur. So I thought it would be fun to photograph one of my girls wearing it! Plus, it’s been pretty cold – it’s nice to keep cozy warm this way. :)
I love these pictures. I wish she could see them.
